Stay safe folks.

Since the pandemic began, 800,000 deaths have been attributed to COVID-19. In October, when the tally stood at 700,000, experts had trouble fathoming COVID reaching the one million mark. But with the sudden rise in deaths, the figure has become inevitable.

Part of the rise in cases stems from the dominance in the Delta variant. The mutations in the Delta variant made the virus more transmissible, with a more serious disease. The strain has been responsible for many of the most recent deaths.

Now, the world is dealing with the latest threat: the Omicron variant. From preliminary research, it seems this variant, although highly contagious, presents milder symptoms. These symptoms include a headache, body aches, and extreme exhaustion in addition to known COVID-19 symptoms like dry cough and fever.

When the variant was first discovered in South Africa, the immediate response to assume the variant was threatening. But in the following weeks, the variant has been mild. Although South Africa’s caseload increased by 300% in a week, the change in death rates has remained the same among the nation’s largely unvaccinated population.

However, even with the news that Omicron is milder and with most of the American adult population vaccinated, the consensus among the medical fraternity is that COVID-19 deaths will reach 1 million cases sooner rather than later.
