Heartburn affects a lot of Americans.

Nothing is worse than having heartburn after enjoying a tasty meal. When it hits, it’s hard to concentrate as the burning sensation is overwhelming. Thankfully, most remedies for heartburn involve practical items you either have on you or keep at home.

Sugar-Free Gum

Chewing on sugar-free gum increases the amount of saliva you produce,  helping to dilute the acid in your stomach. To experience any benefits, you should chew on a stick of gum for at least 30 minutes.

Alkalizing Powder

Alkaline neutralizes acid, which is why nothing will be more effective than drinking alkalizing powder or PH balancing powder. Follow the directions at the back of the pack to make the powder drinkable.

Baking Soda

The alkaline PH in baking soda neutralizes stomach acid, providing temporary relief. For the best effect, pour a teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of water and stir. Although the taste of baking soda is atrocious, don’t gulp it down, as this will worsen your symptoms. Then, after drinking, wait 15 to 30 minutes to feel the effects. However, avoid this remedy if you’re on a low-sodium diet, as baking soda is high in sodium.

You may find heartburn remedies online that say you should eat a banana or some other type of ‘alkalizing’ food. However, these remedies are ineffective since they’ll only increase the amount of acid your stomach produces to digest the food you’ve just eaten.

While you’re experiencing heartburn, avoid caffeine and sugary drinks, as these will exacerbate the issue.
